Itz kneels down next to the Frenchman he just knocked out chanting.

"I offer you the blood of the fallen." Itz chants in the language of his people.

He pulls out his obsidian dagger and slices it across the man's throat.

The Frenchman's blood flows in gruesome spurts from his severed neck arteries, spilling in a large pool that slowly soaks into the grass and dirt. Itz rises slowly from his kneeling position, lifting his stained dagger high into the sky. The others can't help but feel a bit awed and unsettled by the display of savagery.

Itz has gained 1 Power from his blood offering.

Itz seems distracted for a moment, even as the fire begins to burn in earnest, raging all around him. The others shout at him, but he hears their voices dimly, and sees their frantic gestures as if through a heavy fog. Everything seems so petty to him now, as it does immediately after every sacrifice he offers. He has nearly touched divinity, and the concerns of mortal men (even his own!) seem shallow and small in comparison.

It only lasts a moment, though. The world comes into focus around him, and with a sudden POP, the voices of his comrades hit him all at once, urging him to move. The power is like an addiction. He has felt the moment of pure euphoria, but shall pay for it with hours, sometimes even days, of the sober emptiness that follows...

The crew flees the burning slave house, toward the Bastien estate manor. Everyone has a few moments to discuss how to handle the coming confrontation with Jacques.

Zander goes for the closest door. He has one goal in mind: find and kill Jaques. He will slaughter any resistance.

Itz, still chasing the euphoria that always follows his offerings, decides he needs to feel the power again and soon.

Itz draws his sword and rushes towards the main house to find more potential offerings to sacrifice.

Narcisse doesn't bother stopping the others to discuss things further. He trusts Zander to handle this bloody business adequately without his input.

In combat he'll stay back until the others have all engaged the enemy and when he does enter the fray he'll prioritize the least dangerous-looking enemies (he won't pursue fleeing enemies away from the safety of the party). If encountered by enemies he can't reasonably be expected to handle on his own he'll break off and try to put his fellow party members between them and himself, using willpower to defend himself if cornered.

The group covers the half-mile distance between the slave quarters and Bastien's home quickly, their momentum fueled by fury. Jacques has only a few brief minutes to prepare for the counter attack, and has apparently used that time to flee. Itz is the first to crash through Bastien's front door, and rushes to the stairs to make sure the upper level is clear. Adriaan, Zander, and Narcisse spread out on the lower floor. It only takes a minute to realize the house is unoccupied.

Just as the crew makes this realization, a loud voice shouts at them from outside. In French, the man bellows, "Lebeau! You are surrounded by a fine army of Frenchmen! Surrender, and your crew will live."

Itz has a good vantage point from the second floor windows. Bastien has stretched the meaning of the words, "army of Frenchmen," as it seems there are only 3 white men wIth rifles and 2 less than eager African slaves with rapiers accompanying him. Bastien himself has not drawn his own sword. He is clearly not used to fighting.

Narcisse moves through the house with purpose, quickly ascending to its upper floor and joining Itz at the window there. When he sees Jacques' force he allows a crooked smile to spread across his face. Clucking his tongue admonishingly, he twists his neck and pats down his hair with a free hand while collecting himself. He responds in French, "Your time among the English has dulled your mind: It's vanity to think your pitiful band could do what a hundred others could not. Here is my heart, Jacques," Narcisse tugs his waistcoat aside to reveal the skin of his breast, "Pray to Jésus notre Sauveur that your men aim true, because if they don't," he points his sword down at Jacques, tilting it on its side and looking down its blade at him, "You'll just be another dead fool who thought he could kill Cheveux D'or."

Zander will take up a vantage point by the door, using the frame for cover. He will wait for his Captain's orders before opening fire. Unless the enemy makes a run for the entrance before he gets the order to fire, at that point he will shoot on site.

"Here's an idea", Adriaan whispered to Narcisse, "Lets get him to come inside by offering him a cut and we can kill him 4 on 1. Surely the slaves won't fight without the fear he spreads."

Narcisse boldly exposes his chest to the enemy, although the gesture is not quite as heroic as he hopes it appears. From his elevated position on the other side of the open window, shooting him would be quite a difficult task indeed.

Luckily, Jacques does not seem overly eager to test Narcisse in battle. Jacques Bastien looks all around him, seemingly at a loss for what to do next. He certainly did not expect things to turn out this way...

Narcisse has won an intimidation roll against Bastien, with positive modifiers for Narcisse's fame, and negative modifiers because Bastien believes he is in a superior tactical position. He will be quite agreeable to any suggestion for how to resolve this standoff, so long as he's confident his own hide is safe.

"What then, pirate?" Jacques snaps, his voice betraying his nerves. "Shall we be standing on opposite sides of the walls of my home, snapping threats back and forth until exhaustion takes us?"

Adriaan, Will draw his pistol and take up a defensive position covering the stairs so as not to be ambushed from the rear. If the group moves back downstairs he will follow.

Narcisse takes cover in an interior room within sight of the others in the house. When and if enemies enter the building he'll engage after allies have done so.

Itz will cast blessing on himself and will stay near his captain, sword drawn, to defend him but once he sees any enemies he will attack with the intention knocking them out but not killing in hope to sacrifice them for the addictive rush of power.

Chapter 2: Rising Tide - Page 2 Empty Re: Chapter 2: Rising Tide

Post by Mosier Mon May 27, 2013 9:58 pm

Zander is the first one of the group who fires upon the enemy. Maybe it was a lack of communication, or just a simple case of blood lust. Whatever it was, the reason doesn't matter now. Only a miracle can prevent what is apparently about to happen to him...

Round 1:

Zander reveals himself in the first floor window and takes quick but careful aim at the first target he sees, one of the slaves. (Target was randomly chosen)

He pulls the trigger, and the slave staggers backward. Blood pours from the man's torso. The African looks upon his wound with astonishment, his sword falling to the ground. His surprise melts into horror, and he screams as he turns from the house and flees.

"Fornicating pirate!" Bastien shrieks. "Kill them!"

Four things then happen almost simultaneously. The other African slave throws his sword in the dirt and runs toward the injured man, and all three Frenchmen open fire with their muskets as Zander tries to take cover.

Zander counts as having good cover, due to his position behind the wall. Unfortunately, he is not completely protected as he has exposed himself in the window this round, so the cover bonus is not perfect.

The bullets pierce through the wall and window, each striking Zander in a different part of his body. The first bullet grazes across his shoulder, drawing blood but thankfully not crippling wound (1 deadly damage). The second bullet hits him directly in the chest, through the lower part of his left lung and knocking him to the floor (4 deadly damage). The third bullet crashes through his stomach, leaving the bold (but perhaps too eager) Englishman in a heap on the floor (3 damage).

Zander has suffered more deadly damage than his health can handle. Each point of damage beyond his health has been upgraded to aggravated damage, and he is now bleeding to death. He currently has 1 lethal damage upgraded to aggravated damage, and he will continue to receive aggravated damage upgrades at the rate of 1 per minute, unless someone can successfully stabilize him. If he has aggravated damage equal to his health, he will die with no hope for survival.

Itz' heathen prayer unnerves Adriaan, but not Narcisse, who is used to the pagan Blood Mage's ways. For now, Narcisse knows that Itz will be much more ferocious in battle.

Zander is in serious trouble, and will not be able to fight anymore. The good news is that the Frenchmen will take a long time to reload...

If Narcisse is unaware of Zander's condition: With nothing to do but wait he begins reloading one of his pistols. He'll abandon it and drop the pistol to continue using his sword if he encounters trouble before finishing the job.

If Narcisse is aware of Zander's condition: He races downstairs (alongside Itz?), keeping out of sight wherever possible. When he arrives at the body, "You stupid English, you deserve this," he'll take Zander's unfired pistol and shoot out the window at the men while they reload.

Narcisse, Itz, and Adriaan are aware of Zander's condition. Itz had the best view of Zander, and saw the damage done by the French bullets.

Round 2

3 muskets, and 3 shots, Itz thinks. They won't be able to shoot again soon.

Itz dashes past the first floor window, Narcisse close behind him. The Aztec is blessed with a taste of the Sun God's power, but even with a righteous hand guiding him it will take time to see Zander to safety. His wounds are extreme, but the Englishman is strong, and Itz is skilled. The Aztec is certain he can save Zander's life, as long as nobody interrupts his work in the next critical moments.

Adriaan has discovered that the house does not have any other obvious entrances. There is no "back" door to the place, only a large single entrance area. This door is close to where Zander has collapsed.

Narcisse scolds the unconscious Zander. "You stupid English, you deserve this," he says, although Itz detects something strange in his voice. Is it pride? Admiration? Or is it simply frustration? Itz can't be sure, and he doesn't particularly care. Zander's relationship with his captain, who uses Zander's very heritage as a base insult, is complicated.

A moment later, Narcisse is holding Zander's ready pistol, and is prepared to punish the men who tried to murder his first mate.

Outside, Bastien is screeching at his men in French. "Kill the Dutchman, but we need the pirate alive!"

How strange, Narcisse realizes. If Bastien was paid by Bouwer, wouldn't he want the opposite; to kill me, and take Adriaan alive?

-

Itz spends round 2 attempting to stabilize Zander. This roll takes 1 full minute of concentration, and will likely last the rest of the battle.

Adriaan spends round 2 covering the party from anyone attempting to enter the house.

Zander spends round 2 gurgling on his own blood.

Narcisse spends round 2 moving and drawing Zander's pistol.

The Frenchmen spend round 2 starting the reloading process.

Bastien spends round 2 ordering his men and hoping to God they wont be defeated.
